About Prayer (Salah) in Islam

Understanding the significance and divine command of the five daily prayers

The Special Status of Prayer

Prayer or Salah is one of the five basic pillars of Islam that are obligated on every believer. Unlike the other four pillars revealed on earth, Prayer holds a special status as it was given directly to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during the divine journey of Isra and Mi'raj in the seventh heaven. This shows the supreme importance and value of the five daily prayers in the sight of Allah (SWT).

Benefits of Prayer

  • Develops Taqwa: Establishing prayer develops fear and awareness of Allah (Surah Baqarah 2:2-3)
  • Sign of Believer: Prayer is the distinguishing mark of a true believer (Surah Tawba 9:71)
  • Divine Help: Allah's assistance comes through prayer (Surah Baqarah 2:45, 153)
  • Protection from Evil: Prayer protects against sins and wrongdoing (Surah Ankaboot 29:45)
  • Day of Judgment: Those who pray shall have nothing to fear (Surah Baqarah 2:277)

Commands & Warnings

  • Congregation: Command to pray with congregation (Surah Baqarah 2:43)
  • Punctuality: Special emphasis on being punctual in prayer (Surah Baqarah 2:238)
  • Friday Prayer: Special command regarding Jummah prayer (Surah Jumuah 62:9-10)
  • Warning: Shaytaan tries to take people away from prayer (Surah Maeda 5:91)
  • Consequences: Neglecting prayer leads to spiritual corruption (Surah Maryam 19:59)

وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ

"And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience]."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43)
